Bloody Mary's "How To" Making of a Zombie
by Bobbie Weiner
Zombies are one of my favorite characters to create. There are never any two Zombies alike, and that is what is so neat about using make-up, rather than masks. Each one can have different features. I use the same makeup steps and techniques and the same exact products, but we when doing a Zombie, each character will have their own unique look.
My Zombie recipe is for all skin tones, male and female. Start out with a combination of different color foundations. I like a very light flesh color mixed with a deeper beige and a light gray, you can mix them or use each individually and blend on the face and body. I like to use the gray color mostly around the eyes. It gives off a much deeper looking eye socket. Remember to cover the eyebrows and when sponging on the foundation go against the eyebrow so it looks messy. I then use a black or charcoal crayon to draw in any indentation on the face. Use these crayon colors especially around the mouth (laugh lines) and eyes (squint and see the lines that pop up and draw in them). Blend these lines with a small piece of a sponge. After you have finished this process, powder lightly with translucent powder on a big fat powder brush (never use a powder puff).
Now you are ready for my favorite step. Take a teaspoon full of breakfast cereal, place in a small baggy and smash it with a spoon. I have experimented with lots of cereals and find that Special K is the lightest and easiest to crumble up. Do not use Rice Krispies!! I tried once and as the actor started sweating he would ever so softly snap, crackle and pop.
Place water soluble Spirit Gum on your subject’s face sporadically (about the size of a dime) and let the Spirit Gum get sticky (takes about ten seconds). Take a small pinch of cereal and push it onto the Spirit Gum. Some cereal will stick and some will flake off, but that is okay. Now you are ready to use a liquid Daytex on the cereal. Apply a small amount of Daytex with a small make-up sponge quickly and dry with a hair dryer right away. Then take your make-up crayon (Brown or Charcoal) and color in between and around the cereal. Take a bit of FX thick stage blood and dab a tiny bit around the cereal for an oozing look. You can also use a dab of Castor Oil or Mineral Oil for a pus effect.
I like to top off the look with a touch of Hair White on the eyebrows, eyelashes and around the hairline. Apply this with a small eyebrow brush or a small child's toothbrush. Remember to always have a camera handy, so you can take pictures of your creation. It is a good reference in case you want to repeat the look, and it is always fun to have photos of what you created whether it was on yourself or others. Best of luck!!
