Underground DJ
D.J.D.K.
Here it is Ghosts and Ghouls, another review of spooktacular
music by your one and only underground disc jockey D.J.D.K. (Did ya miss me?)
Today we have four devious discs for your morbid enjoyment, but let’s not pitter-patter,
let’s go right for the meat of the matter!
Our first selection is Gates of Delirium by Midnight
Syndicate. If you are in the mood for moody music, then this is your CD.
Where do these boys come up with this stuff? Midnight Syndicate has outdone
themselves with this third masterpiece. The CD maintains a consistent
storyline and feel throughout, as listeners are taken to Haverghast Asylum for
a tour of its dark secrets and spectral inhabitants. Many of the instru‘mental
movements work well to give that eerie feel. Each selection ranges from 58
seconds to just over 4 minutes. Not only is it great sound for inside your
Haunt, this CD would work well for queue-line entertainment or the background
music for that especially dark-themed party. The incredible orchestration comes
through with few sound effects to clutter up the piece, giving it a movie
soundtrack feel. All in all this descent into insanity through the Gates Of
Delirium is one you will cherish!
Dr. Lady Proudly Presents…Horror Hotel by John
“Wolfie” Hamrick is next on our list of auditory exploration. With its
wonderfully twisted song titles, this enjoyable CD contains many tracks that
would be incredibly useful for haunting your attraction or for entertaining the
throngs of patrons waiting to get into your haunt. Sound effects are scattered
throughout (many of them the voice of Dr. Lady himself) like so many body parts
in a John Burton production. The artist did not stop at the “punny” song
titles. Tunes like the Were Waltz brings to mind the demented type of
party that I like to throw, but it is not a waltz at all. On the other severed
hand The Vampire Annoying Tune, is a musical train wreck that fits its
title quite nicely. My favorite piece is Laura’s Behind You…Walk Faster,
which stands up the hairs on the back of your neck and keeps you looking over
your shoulder. The “good” doctor’s use of shrieks and sound effects are not
invasive and bleed well into the overall composition. The 23 separate tracks
vary in length from 17 seconds to over 5 minutes. The whole CD is fun, and is a
must have for your Haunting audio library.
Now it is time to run away and join the carnival. “Step
right up and see the amazing, the unbelievable, the available for your
attraction CD, Dark Ride by Rain Station.” A journey through a
veritable midway of new music written for old pretzel rides. The use of sound
effects is limited only to those that help create the feel of the piece. The
styles of music range widely from Heavy Metal beats through old time Rock and
Roll to the almost cutesy Trick Or Treatin. This nostalgically fun
selection, took me back to my early days as a young zombie, heading out on
Halloween with the lust for candy in my heart. The CD would be great for line
entertainment or a party, with a little bit for every taste and some of the
beats are infectious.
Our final review is a sequel to the very popular Pumpkinland
CD, called (as sequels usually are) Pumpkinland II, by Mark
Harvey. Not music, exactly, the tracks on this CD are beautifully conducted
soundscapes, designed to create atmos‘fear’ described by the track titles.
These tracks when applied to the correct room, will complement the eeriness
without overpowering the sets. The selections are longer than most so as not to
drive your actors insane from the repetition. The choice of sounds to make up
each piece is precise so as not to detract from the mood being set. Unless you
are a total Halloween junkie like me, you may not keep this CD in your walkman
or car CD player, but for spooky background fill for your attraction, you
cannot go wrong with this sequel, which unlike the movies is as good or better
than the original.
So that slams the lid on this issue’s selection of audible
goodies from the grab bag. I suggest that you pick up each of these little
treasures to complete your scary music library. Each has its own creepy
advantages and will prove to be useful to anyone in the Boo Business. So until
the next time that our corpses cross, this is D.J.D.K. signing off to all may
fiends and fans.
“Stay Scary!”
