Okay, these are some VERY basic tips, but I am surprised how many haunted houses don’t do these things on their website. I have been looking through tons of haunted house websites lately and have gotten frustrated with how hard it is to get info some times. So here are some tips that will be obvious to a lot of you but others have taken for granted.

(1) UPDATE YOUR SITE BEFORE LABOR DAY!

Or at least 30 days before you open. I would recommend doing it well before this actually, but this should be your deadline. Maybe you don’t open until Oct 2, but if your customers check your website in September and see old information, it looks like you went out of business or aren’t opening this year. Check your Google analytics and you will see that people are coming to your site already – you might as well give them accurate information and make sure they know you are open this season.

(2) LIST THE DATES & TIMES YOUR ARE OPERATING.

Yes, I know that seems pretty obvious but not everyone does this. A separate menu button that the visitor can click to get the details is ideal but if you are keeping it simple, make the event schedule very obvious. Also, list your dates in chronological order, don’t list the Friday dates you are open, then the Saturday dates you are open, etc. The easiest way is with a simple calendar graphic with your dates colored in or marked in some way.

(3) INCLUDE THE ACTUAL ADDRESS OF YOUR EVENT

You obviously want to make sure your customers can find you as easily as possible to find your event. Many sites provide a map link or a set of directions from multiple reference points. These are all good, but sometimes people want to use their preferred mapping software or their GPS device. Sometimes, the road you are on may not be listed in their software, but then they can revert to your directions or map. The only time I would NOT include the actual address is if the online maps misstate directions or misdirect people.

(4) INVEST IN YOUR WEBSITE

A cheap looking website can make your event look cheap. You may or may not have the budget for it, but your website is one of the most important marketing tools you have so spend some money on it when you can. If you “got a guy” that does it and it doesn’t look the best, be nice, thank him and let him know you need to move on. There are plenty of web designers, graphic artists out there to do this work and it isn’t going to bankrupt you either. I have listed some of those that do a lot of work in the industry below but the key is to at least get a professional to do it.

It is too late to fix some of these things this year, but keep it in mind for next year!

  • I can’t tell you how many sites I’ve navigated trying to find an address and location past all the graphics they have on the site! Good advice!
