Blood Manor Haunted House, New York City
October 8th, 2009
I took a train, then a boat, then the subway and then walked 5 blocks to get to Blood Manor Haunted House in New York City tonight. After seeing it, I’d visit Blood Manor again even if I had to walk across hot coals and broken glass – this place is incredible.
I got to Blood Manor Haunted House around 7:00pm tonight and met up with Mike Rodriguez who quickly gave me a tour around the place. Its not a huge haunt but they pack in a lot of scenes, a lot of scares and a lot of energy in the square footage they have.
Walking around backstage, I could feel the energy amongst the crew and I knew it was going to be a good show. When I was backstage, I saw one of the house rules for actors and it was “Everyone gets blood.” And you can see from the photos that they use a lot of blood. In addition, tonight, Blood Manor had the New York Times and a television crew from Telemundo there so there was a lot of press roaming around.
The Haunt itself has a variety of scenes and is designed for an older crowd – the graphic scenes aren’t exactly family friendly. The sets are very good with plenty of detail and good lighting. There aren’t a lot of animations, but the ones that are there are done well. Now that I think of it, there probably were a fair amount of animations but because the actors are the focus, I didn’t notice the animations as much. Although the technology for the Heart room with its room shaking heart beat and the drop ceiling at the finale were first rate gags.
Speaking of acting, this was a strong point for Blood Manor. Few if any actors just screamed “Ahhh!” Each scene had actors with dialogue that told the story of their scene. It was short dialogue and didn’t require you to stop and watch anything, but it was just enough to make the scene more interesting. The actors were full of energy and interacted well with the guests. Everyone from the glutton eating intestines to the zombie strippers delivered fantastic performances across the board. (wow, intestine eating glutton and zombie strippers in the same sentence, never thought you’d see that did you?)
Mike introduced me to his two partners, both of which are named Jim and it was great to meet the whole leadership team. All three gentlemen were great guys and I appreciate the time they gave me. Blood Manor is a great haunt and you have to see it if you are ever in the area. It has fantastic set decoration and scenes, quality acting, loads of energy and blood, lots and lots of blood.
Great work on the haunted house guys and thank you for your hospitality. I really enjoyed your haunt and hope to visit again. Have a great season.
