Castle of Chaos Haunted House in Salt Lake City, UT
October 8th, 2009
Castle of Chaos or just The Castle is a haunted house located in Salt Lake City, Utah owned and operated by James Bernard and John Cluff. This is a haunt with great make-up and a lot of scares.
After a long flight from New Jersey, I was glad to land in Salt Lake City. I have never been to Salt Lake and loved the crisp air and the view of the mountains; quite a change from Newark, NJ. After checking into my hotel, I went to visit Castle of Chaos (which is often called simply, The Castle) since it opened the earliest of the three haunted houses I was trying to visit tonight.
I got to The Castle a little early which gave me a chance to get behind the scenes a little and talk to James Bernard and John Cluff who operate this Haunt. I got to meet some of the folks in the make-up room too and James told me that they have quite a few people on staff that used to work at Rocky Point.
Once The Castle opened and a few guests arrived, I got in line with them to take a look at the live show. It is a single element show, but is a decent size show that took a while to get through. The Haunt had plenty of dark spaces and lots of actors to pop out and scare the folks I was with. Scenery was solid with a really good looking swamp scene. I really enjoyed the acting too – most had dialogue instead of just screaming “Ahhh!” The vampires was especially good (you can see her getting her makeup applied in the pic above). I liked the bit at the end too where they have you lay down in a coffin – then the bottom falls out and you slide down into a chainsaw scene. The people I were with were scared almost the entire time and let out several screams du ring the tour.
James and John were excellent hosts and I enjoyed their Haunt. I thought the effort they put into the makeup, costumes and acting certainly paid off and made for a scary time.
