Phobia Haunted House, Houston, TX
October 28th, 2009
Phobia Haunted House is apparently built on an aquifer of Red Bull because its actors seemed to have boundless energy. If you like high energy haunts, then you would definitely like Phobia.
Phobia Haunted House was my last stop of the night and I got there in time to see all of their shows. I met the owner when I got to Phobia and he was kind enough to get me a set of Phobia coins (you pass a gold coin to the host at each attraction to gain admittance) and walk me to the front of the lines so I was to sure to see all of Phobia before they started shutting down.
Phobia has six different haunts on the property with different themes but all are high energy, have great props and an industrial feel to them. One thing they also have in common is insane actors. During the first haunt I was impressed with the shear number of actors that would surround me and doing dialogue, chanting, growling, hopping or slamming themselves into walls.
By time I was halfway through the second haunt, I was wondering how in the world these actors could have this much energy – it was the end of night on Saturday before Halloween – you know they had a very busy night already, but they were still going extremely hard. One actor did handsprings down the hallway and timed it so his feet slammed into the wall while on his hands for the startle scare, and then bounced off and landed upright to deliver yet another scare. Afterwards, when I found out how many actors there actually were in the haunt, I was amazed because I was expecting twice the headcount because they were all over of the place.
I really enjoyed Phobia and the groups I spoke with did too. Phobia is Six high energy, startling and fun haunts in one location. Thank you so much for the terrific show and your hospitality and I hope you have a great season.
