While driving through Alabama, I heard a commercial for the Sloss Fright Furnace Haunted House and looked it up on the net. Fortunately for me, it was going to be open on Wednesday so I added it to the schedule.

Sloss Fright Furnace Haunted House is an event held at an old iron furnace and let me tell you, its a creepy place. I got my ticket and entered the midway which was located beneath an elevated highway. It seemed odd at first, but makes a lot of sense – its flat, completely covered and the highway was probably 40 to 50 feet above so it creates a great midway with an industrial flare to it which is perfect for an old iron furnace haunt. I was given a boarding pass marked ‘K’ and was told to listen for my group to be called.

I used my time to wander the midway and saw they had custom scary pictures available where guest could get their picture taken in a scene plus food and other goodies. Near the assembly point for groups was a large screen where they were showing the movie Quarantine which is an okay movie, but was made scarier by watching it under the highway. Eventually, they called for ‘K’ and we lined up to go in.

Most of the haunt has you walking through the outside portions of the facility past huge pipes and machinery with a few diversion inside. They had the place fogged just right and it created a very creepy setting. The people in my group were ready to scream already without any actors just because of the atmosphere. As you might imagine, the haunt features a lot of industrial related scenes and zombie-like creatures jumping out at us.

I was impressed with how the producers/directors developed the haunt and used the facility without over-decorating. Sometimes, haunters inherit a wonderful facility and in their excitement, over decorate or stray far from the natural environment. But not at Sloss. The Director, Grant, did a great job of mixing in some scenes that matched the setting along with using the natural dark spaces and fog to create a truly eerie and scary experience. The group I was with got scared a lot and even when they weren’t screaming, they were still scared.

I was fortunate I was able to add this haunt to the schedule and enjoyed it quite a bit. Great show and I recommend you visit if you ever have the chance.
