Stadium of Screams at Gwinnett Braves Stadium, Atlanta, GA
October 21st, 2009
Continuing my journey south, I crossed the state border into Georgia and headed to Atlanta. There are quite a few haunts in Atlanta so I mapped out my visits and headed to Stadium of Screams at Gwinnett Braves Stadium for my first stop on Saturday night. The Stadium of Screams is a first year haunt with a great story so read on.
Stadium of Screams at Gwinnett Braves Stadium Haunted House was very easy to find right off the expressway and after all, it is a baseball stadium so its pretty noticeable. Built for baseball games, the facility featured plenty of well-lit parking so I found a spot and went up to the ticket booth. The folks in the ticket booth were very warm and welcoming and set me up with a fast pass to zip through the lines so I could hit more haunts that night.
Stadium of Screams has quite a lot going on – two scary attractions, Tunnel of Terror and Corridor of Horror and one “not so spooky” for young children. They also had a dance group performing Thriller but it wasn’t just a replica of the Thriller dance, these guys mixed in all kinds of new moves that I certainly could never have come close to doing in my best days. They are clearly trying to appeal to a wide range of age groups and is very family friendly while also providing scarier activities for adults. I went ahead and headed for the first attraction where we had to take an elevator to a lower level. After so many fake elevators, it was strange to be in real one for once.
This ball park is big so the producers picked a few spots like the tunnels and hallways that could effectively be transformed into smaller, scarier spaces. While many haunters would love more space, this show had to work hard to make it more intimate given the expansive facility and I think they did a good job of that. The haunts are good and scary and have a large variety of scenes and props that I wasn’t expecting in a first year haunt. I even saw the giant scary bunny costume I hadn’t seen since Dent Schoolhouse (love that costume). The haunts were well decorated and the actors were very energetic too – one particular scene has an actor pushing another actor on a gurney straight at us as we entered a hallway. This guy was speeding down the hallway at us while his patient was screaming wildly – it gave the group a great scare.
So, two great haunts that don’t feel like first year haunts is a good story in and of itself, but the really interesting part is how he producers came about doing this. Well, the producer had been a home haunter for years and had appeared in the newspaper a couple of times so he must have had a pretty good home haunt. When the new Gwinnett stadium was built, the ball team decided to do a halloween event and recruited the home haunters from the newspaper. They got together, worked out a deal and Stadium of Screams was created. How about that for a home haunters dream: a home haunter gets recruited to the big leagues. So, all you home haunters, keep working hard and maybe you might just get called up someday.
