A week into the season, a few more Haunts opened up and we decided to visit The Chambers of Horrors Haunted House in Middletown, Ohio on Sept 18th. We got there a little before opening so we talked with some of the people in line and we talked about the old urban legend of the Haunted House that gives your money back if you can complete it.

Since we got to the Haunt early, we got to go in pretty quickly. We started off with a quick video that explained the background of the Chambers. The video was done in the style of the movie Saw, and was done really well. At first I thought it would be a cheesy attempt at copying a movie, but I was impressed with the way they shot it and edited it.

Once inside, we began to wander through the Chambers. The Haunt advertises that it is over 30 rooms and more than 100 doors and I didn’t count them, but I believe it. One particular room features about eight different doors and you are instructed to pick a door. Eventually we find the right one and continue on our way. The scares were frequent and well timed and there was one scene in a particular where you walk into a large room that might be an industrial kitchen or freezer, I couldn’t tell since it was pretty dark and when the chainsaw guy came running out I was too busy laughing my ass off at my wife who got scared silly. The path leads back to the room with eight doors a couple of times which is disorienting but an interesting set up.

At the end of the Haunt, we ended up in their gift shop where we met the owner who was very interested in hearing how long it took us and wanted to make sure his actors were working hard. We assured him they were, and it was nice to see his passion for putting on a great show – a hallmark it seems of this industry.
