The Haunted Mine Haunted House is actually located in Fawn, PA at the Tour-Ed Mine. Once a functioning coal mine, the mine is now is used to educate people about coal mines and show them what it is like. During October however, the mine is transformed into a haunted house.

A short drive from downtown Pittsburgh, the Haunted Mine was easy to find. After parking, I hopped in a small tram and rode to the ticket booth. Once I got my ticket, I walked down to the entrance of the haunt which is contained in a quonset hut. The Haunt starts with a more traditional theme with a victorian/historical feel to it. The tour continues until you exit the hut and go to the mine entrance.

After being handed a hard hat, we were led to the mine train (there is probably a real name for this thing but I’m not a miner). This was a cool part of the tour – a real mine, and a real mine train that you climb into and then get transported deep into the mine. Talk about atmosphere! They actually filmed the re-make of My Bloody Valentine here which is a cool little factoid.  When you get out of the car, you realize the tunnels are only about six feet tall at its highest points and you now appreciate the hard hat as you bump your head every now and then on the ceiling.

The Haunt weaves back and forth in the mine shafts with walls mostly made up of pallet wood that fits nicely into the surroundings and much of the haunt is simply the shaft walls. The areas are dark and creepy and you are constantly aware that you are in a mine which is very unique to this Haunt. I liked that they didn’t try to over decorate the haunt – just walking around there with a flashlight would be scary so throwing in blinking lights and actors just makes it worse (or better considering on your perspective).

The Haunted Mine is a unique event with a great setting. (I’d love to hear from other mines – I think there is one in Colorado – love to hear from you.) The crew was energetic and clearly put a lot of effort into the show. If you are in the area, you should definitely check it out.
