The Haunted Mortuary Haunted House, New Orleans, LA
October 27th, 2009
The Haunted Mortuary Haunted House website depicts an elegant, grand old building and surprisingly enough, it really is in that building. Located next to and old cemetery, this looked like a great haunt.
It was still raining when I got to the Haunted Mortuary Haunted House on Thursday night but there was still a crowd waiting to get in. I got to the ticket booth and met one of the managers, Trampus Hock who showed me around a little before my tour. I went in with the next group at the door and received an introductory narrative from a character with some great 3-D paint that was revealed at just the right time.
We wound our way through the house which in the off season is used for corporate events, weddings and other social activities. The building is beautiful and has a strong haunted mansion feel to it. They mix in props and animations into the scenes but the scares come primarily from the actors. The group I was with was getting scared pretty regularly as we walked through. They also used an interesting projection technique where they projected images onto a curtain of mist to make it appeal ethereal which looked pretty cool.
The crypt in the basement was actually an area that was dug out within the last few years for the sole purpose of putting the crypt down there. Its an eerie feeling to know that you are standing at about the same depth as the graves next door and not knowing how far those graves actually were.
The Haunted Mortuary was a good haunt with a great building and good scenes and acting. I was glad I got to meet Trampus and look forward to seeing him again. Thanks for a great show and I hope you have a great season.
